This comes after the TLP protests. According to the Information Minister, social media must be kept in check by the law.
He explained that they are rampant with fake notifications, news, and accounts and this must be dealt with.
During the weekend, the government reached somewhat of an agreement with protesters regarding Aasia Bibi’s acquittal. The Minister cautioned that the government won’t allow the “rebellion, which took place recently and caused damage to public property”.
He stated that, “The Constitution and law of the state were insulted. This act is hard to forgive”.
Pakistan Media Regulatory Authority will also be able to regulate social media. The Information Minister mentioned this at a panel “There is no Truth: Only Narrative”.
He further elaborated that private TV channels in the country broadcast many different news stories. He stated that many of them end up being fake and that this need to be kept in check.
Fawad stated that developed countries do control and regulate social media in their countries. Those countries should be aware of the havoc social media is able to cause in developing countries.
