Asia Cup 2018: Super Four Match 4 – Afghanistan vs. Bangladesh

The Afghanistan team’s second loss in the Super fours on Wednesday resulted in them being knocked out of the running. On Sunday, they lost to Bangladesh by 3 runs in a nail-biter of a match. They are, however, still loved by the fans for their formidable and unexpected performance in the tournament.

Bangladesh won the toss and decided to bat first. The team was off to a shaky start as well; it seemed like their batting was going to be a repeat of the last two matches. However, Imrul Kayes and Mahmudullah’s 123 run partnership left them with a challenging score for the Afghanistan team.

A few notable players from the Bangladeshi side, like Shakib al Hasan and Mushfiqur went early or didn’t perform as well as expected. The only sixes that came out were two from Mahmudullah and one from Mushfiqur’s innings of 33 runs coupled with a few fours.

The target was 249 runs and Afghanistan, just like Bangladesh, wasn’t off to such a great start. They lost one of their openers early on. Even Rahmat Shah, who had won a couple of man of the match awards this tournament, failed to deliver this time and went off the pitch early with one run only. He was bowled out by a cramping Mustafizur.

This was Bangladesh’s 3rd direct hit run out in the last 12 months. The third wicket added 63 runs together and managed to keep the team together for a while. Afghanistan just needed 3 runs from the last delivery but Mustafizur managed to keep the Afghans under control, not letting them surpass the required score to win.

Mahmudullah, Kayes and Mustafizur contributed quite a lot to keep the team’s run in the tournament alive. For his efforts, Mahmudullah also won the man of the match for his splendid innings. His, Hasmatullah, and Imrul’s innings were the only half centuries that were scored as a result of this match.
